The Visual Communication Engines (VCE) research on error correcting codes is concentrated on algebraic geometry codes that are the natural successors of the Reed-Solomon codes.
Algebraic geometry codes can correct longer errors than Reed-Solomon codes and have better and more flexible parameters.
VCE has also performed investigations on the interleaver part of the turbocodes. New interleavers were obtained that are among the best interleavers known. They produce turbocodes with a large minimum distance and their description can be done on a very compact way.
A typical application of error correcting codes developed by VCE is in storage devices where the trend to smaller bit recording size requires more efficient error correction schemes for a same size of a defect.
These technologies are also applicable to wireless communications that are sensitive to transmission disturbances.
